Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Revealing details for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—used the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and warns that it is a hostile place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the party access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule the city for a multiple motives, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Questers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can expect finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
